About Us
The first Ukrainian Catholic liturgy in Kingston was celebrated at the end of the War in 1945, by Captain Reverend Michael Pelech, Ukrainian chaplain for Canada Military District No. 10. The city mayor, various dignitaries and a handful of Ukrainian families attended this event, which marks the birth of the Kingston Ukrainian Catholic community.
St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church was officially founded in 1949. Initially, liturgies were celebrated in the St. James Chapel at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, in downtown Kingston.
In 1959, members of the local Ukrainian community joined efforts to build a new community hall at 472 Bagot st., to be used as a cultural centre and meeting place. In 1980, the community hall was converted for use as our church and consecrated by Isidore Borecky, then bishop of the Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada.
Since 2014, Father Roman Rytsar has been the administrator of the church.
